Ignaz Lieben Symposium 2022: Organizational Form and Epistemic Interest
On 23–24 June 2022, the Ignaz Lieben Society hosted the Ignaz Lieben Symposium 2022, entitled "Organizational Form and Epistemic Interest. On the interplay between the organizational design of research institutions and the nature of knowledge production", at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna (Josefstädter Straße 39, 1080 Vienna). The symposium was held in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) at the University of Wuppertal and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna.
What does the organizational form of research institutions have to do with what is studied there, how it is studied, and what results emerge? Questions of organization usually receive little attention in the history and sociology of science, where researchers are often treated as largely independent actors, unaffected by their institutional affiliation. Yet research has historically been organized in many different ways — across regions, nations, and cultures — each developing incentive structures that, intentionally or not, shape scholarly approaches. Taking a historical perspective, the symposium set out to identify the relevant factors and to make the underlying patterns visible.
Organizing committee: Rupert Pichler, Thomas Heinze, Wolfgang Reiter, Volker Remmert, and Johannes Feichtinger.
