Gmelin-Beilstein Memorial Coin 2026 to Helmut Maier
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) conducts and supports research projects in the fields of history of science, philosophy of science and sociology of science. Cooperation between the three core disciplines of history, philosophy and sociology, as well as physics and mathematics, is focussed on the development and structure of science and technology. The centre cultivates interdisciplinary work between the humanities, natural sciences and technical sciences. By organizing colloquia, lecture series, workshops and project-related cooperation, the IZWT promotes dialogue between the different cultures of knowledge.
Exhibition: “The Thread of Memory: Spanish Women Workers and Working Culture in the North Rhine-Westphalian Textile Industry”
The exhibition will be on display at the Wuppertal University Library from June 3 to July 14, 2026, and is dedicated to a hitherto largely overlooked chapter of post-war European history: the migration of Spanish workers to Western Europe in the 1960s. At its center lies the story of the first female textile workers from the province of Salamanca—who arrived in Remscheid in 1960—exploring their daily lives and working realities, their contribution to the industrial and cultural development of their new home, and the various forms of remembering these experiences.
The exhibition was curated by students from the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies at the University of Wuppertal, under the direction of Dr. Carmen Pérez González. It is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and by the Friends and Alumni of the University of Wuppertal.
