Interdisciplinary Centre for Science and Technology Studies

Welcome to the pages of the IZWT

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) conducts and supports research projects in the fields of history of science, philosophy of science and sociology of science. Cooperation between the three core disciplines of history, philosophy and sociology, as well as physics and mathematics, is focussed on the development and structure of science and technology. The centre cultivates interdisciplinary work between the humanities, natural sciences and technical sciences. By organizing colloquia, lecture series, workshops and project-related cooperation, the IZWT promotes dialogue between the different cultures of knowledge.

Research Colloquium History of Science and Technology

The Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) hosts its research colloquium on the history of science and technology on April 20, 2026. Starting at 4 pm, doctoral researchers present and discuss their ongoing dissertation projects in the seminar room on the 6th floor of the GSH (Kasinostr. 19–21, 42103 Wuppertal).

Three presentations offer insights into a broad thematic range. Sabrina Engert reflects on the theoretical challenges and findings from her first working phase in her project Kosmos, Körper, Kanon – Epistemische Autoritäten zwischen Zergliederung und Neuordnung (c. 1500–1700), under the title “Dem Theorie-Dickicht entkommen.” Pablo Gómez Samper poses the question “What is an Algebra Book in 16th-century Europe?” as part of his dissertation on geometrical demonstrations in early modern algebra, exploring transmissions and innovations of a mathematical practice. Tim Lork approaches questions of boundary-drawing in the history of science with his talk “Abgrenzung im Zwiesel-Zwist: Annäherungen an eine Typologie der Demarkationsarbeit,” situated within his broader project on the history of demarcation.

All interested parties are warmly welcome to attend.

Obituary Maria Remenyi

Dr Maria Remenyi (born 1960) passed away on 12 March. She had been a research associate in the History of Science and Technology since 2011. After completing her doctorate in mathematics (1986), she initially worked as a research assistant in the SFB 123, Quantum Stochastics, at the University of Heidelberg (1986-1989), before taking up a position as an editor and programme planner for mathematics at Vieweg-Verlag (1989-1992). This was followed by postgraduate studies in history, philosophy and history of science in Regensburg (1992-1995), then freelance work from 1996 to 2006 and work as a research assistant at the Mathematical Institute in Mainz from 2006 to 2011, from where she moved to Wuppertal in 2011, where she also worked as a research assistant (with reduced working hours). Although her ability to work was already limited since 1992 due to a chronic illness, her research was highly visible in the history of science, including in her close collaboration with Volker Remmert since 2006. One example of this is the joint DFG project Mathematik und ihre Öffentlichkeiten: Mediation, Transformation and Reception of Mathematical Knowledge beyond the Discourse of Specialised Science in Germany, 1871-1960. Her most recent publication was the volume co-edited with Volker Remmert "... an intimate interweaving of both factual and personal nature". On the conferences at the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach, 1945-1960, Oberwolfach 2025 (DOI 10.14760/978-3-00-082798-3).

In Maria Remenyi, the history of science has lost an exceptionally bright, always helpful colleague whose clarity, warmth and courage were appreciated and admired in the community.

We will miss her very much.
